SCHERERVILLE, Ind. - Two weeks ago Jeff Cannon was a wreck. Well, at least his No. 33 race car was less than healthy after a mishap at the ASA-sanctioned Illiana Speedway.

Saturday night? It was a rocket.

"The boys put together a good hot rod tonight," Cannon said after capturing the 25-lap late-model feature and unofficially taking the points lead away from Mike White.

On a restart just 10 laps from the finish, Cannon went to the high side and quickly passed both second-running White and race leader Andy Marchiniak. He went on to beat Marchiniak by 0.901 seconds.

"It was working good on the top," said Cannon, who came into the night seven points behind White in the points. "We've been working on it all week to get all the little things fixed from a couple of weeks ago.

"I think we're gaining on it. We've got a couple more things to do, and I think we'll be in good shape."

White, meanwhile, finished third behind the wheel of Ray Wroblewski's No. 14 car that the duo regularly campaign on Friday nights at Grundy County Speedway. White's Auburn Supply-sponsored No. 00 was wrecked too badly during a qualifying attempt last week to attempt repairs.

White had a couple of chances to get past Marchiniak and take the lead, but never could quite get the pass completed.

"The car was a whole lot better tonight than I expected the first night off the trailer," said White, who had only driven the No. 14 one time at Illiana, and that was for only seven laps before it rained.

"We do have enough laps in tonight to know what we need to change and it's only going to get better. It'll get real interesting. The guy in the 72 (Marchiniak) drove a really, really good race. Cannon was just faster than everybody. I'm happy with third for tonight."

Bobby Gash finished fourth in Saturday's main ahead of Mike Monroe. Monroe, a close third in points, didn't have a great night, but is still well within striking distance in the race for the 2008 title.

Anthony Danta won for the seventh time in the limited late-model class, but didn't gain a whole lot on points leader John Nutley.

Danta took the lead from Nutley on lap 19 and ran away to the win by 1.550 seconds.

"It's a great feeling," Danta said. "At the beginning I got hung up on the outside. A yellow helped me out, and allowed me to catch up to (the leaders) with 10 to go. It was good racing. It's been an awesome year."

Nutley, who came into the night with a 34-point lead on second-ranking Johnny Senerchia and a 71-point advantage on Danta, didn't hurt his title chances any with a second-place finish. Senerchia checked in third, followed by Kevin Moenck and Doug Hayes.

Scott Gardner continued his late-season surge with his second consecutive turbo stox feature win. Gardner passed Billy Jarrells on lap 15, and beat him to the line by more than three seconds.

"That was a lot of fun. The car has been fast lately," Gardner said. "I started where I deserved (as the fast qualifier) and I think the car... I'm finally starting to learn to drive it, maybe."

Runaway points leader Eddie Ligue was third, followed by Brian Kucaba and Pat O'Rourke.

Chris King was the winner in the Legends feature event, while Tim Cronin prevailed in the pure stocks 'A' main.
