Jeff Cannon gave away a lot of candy as part of "Kids Night" on Saturday at the ASA-sanctioned Illiana Speedway.
Before all was said and done, he was feeling pretty sweet himself.
The defending track champion broke a season-long dry spell with a magnificent performance in his 2008 Impala, beating four-time track titlist Mike White in the 25-lap feature.
Cannon took the lead from White via the high side on lap 19, and went on to score the victory.
"Terrific. We're finally here," Cannon said in victory circle. "I didn't think we were going to get here this year.
"The crew worked really hard on the car the last two weeks after we had a crash. Maybe we bent something the right way."
Cannon won five feature events en route to the track crown in 2007. Going into Saturday, however, his best finish in 2008 had been a third-place finish on June 14.
Cannon, however, was fast all night, winning his heat race and moving up quickly from his seventh starting spot in the main. After passing White for the lead, he went on to prevail by 0.375 seconds.
Mike Monroe, who started on the pole and led the first 11 laps, finished in third. Shawn Wiltjer matched his best finish of the season with a fourth, followed by Chris Cooling and Bobby Gash.
In the limited late-model class, Anthony Danta won his fifth feature of the season, and his second in a row.
Danta came from the eighth starting position and methodically worked his way to the front of the pack. He spent three laps behind race leader John Senerchia before taking over on lap 21.
From there, Danta quickly pulled away, beating Senerchia to the finish line by 1.139 seconds. Third went to points leader John Nutley, while Gash, Rita Fields and Doug Hayes completed the top six.
"I got hung up in some traffic and everyone was running real hard," Danta said. "I finally got to those guys after a yellow when my tires cooled off. The car has just been really good all year."
Points leader Eddie Ligue earned his fourth feature win of the season in the turbo stox division. After gaining some spots due to wrecks that occurred in front of him, Ligue was able to seize the lead from Bobbie Jean Wall on lap 19, and set sail from there.
"It was rough out there," Ligue said. "I don't know... some of them guys need to have a little bit more patience out there and let it ride through. At the end there it was just a matter of picking them off one by one."
Veteran Pat O'Rourke also played it cool and got a second-place finish in return. Wall was a very solid third, followed by Mark Ross Jr., Josh Easto and Jerry Barnett.
Max McNamara proved to be a dominator in the legends feature, beating Chris King by a very wide margin. After a late mechanical failure sent leader Tim Cronin to the sidelines, Mike Lindemulder scored the victory in the pure stocks main over Dave Jacobs and Bob Rohweder.
