SCHERERVILLE, Ind. -

After capturing Saturday night's Illiana Derby Run for the Roses 100 at the ASA-sanctioned Illiana Speedway, Brett Sontag said the score was even for his last four visits - two victories and two poles. He wasn't talking about pole positions. "I got two light poles, and I won the Bettenhausen and now this," the Joliet native said with a smile. "It'll probably be a light pole next time." Saturday, it was lights out for the rest of the field, as Sontag came from fourth starting position to pass Griffin McGrath on lap 16. He led the final 84 laps to become the second winner of the season in the ASA Northern Division series. For much of the race, Sontag and fast qualifier Anthony Danta ran 1-2 in relatively close tandem. "Me and Anthony made kind of a little deal through out spotters about getting out and cruising," Sontag said. "I don't know, though. I don't think he was cruising and I don't think I was cruising. "I'm just glad. I was worried about Big Eddie coming in there at the end." Eddie Hoffman, who won the ASA North season opener in Toledo, Ohio, was a non-factor at the finish, checking in sixth. Sontag's ultimate competition would instead come from Joey King of Silvis, Illinois. King took second place away from Danta shortly after a restart on lap 90. He closed briefly on Sontag, but never did get close enough to make a pass attempt. "I was kind of thinking about him for a few laps when he was in second," Sontag said. "I kept looking in the mirror, and when I got out on him I was like, 'Okay, we're okay.' I was just afraid we'd burn the tires off the car." Sontag beat King to the finish line by 0.808 seconds. Danta was third, followed by Brian Campbell and Chris Eggleston. Danta not only walked away with an impressive third-place finish, he now owns the Illiana Speedway late-model qualifying record. Danta was the last of four drivers to smash the existing mark, taking a 19.531-second tour of the half-mile oval. "All in all it was a pretty good day," Danta said. "In practice we put a set of sticker tires on and it really wasn't that good. I was just hoping to kind of get in the top five or six (for qualifying). "The first lap didn't feel that great and it wasn't that great. But then the second lap just felt really good, and everything was awesome." The 25-lap Legends feature went to Chris King, who took the lead from Jimmy Hansen just five laps from the finish. James Edsall was third, followed by Cullen Camasta and Aaron Holden. Former champion Craig Amptmeyer captured his first turbo stox feature of the season, outlasting Billy Jarrells and Pat O'Rourke.  The IRS Midgets made their first appearance of 2009, with Freddie Teer beating out Allen Gillis in the main event, while Michael Martin made it 2-for-2 in the pure stocks 'A' main, outduelling George Werner and Tim Cronin
